Moppets is the program where our little ones play while we are in MOPS. We are getting so excited about our first MOPS meeting in September! Currently we are looking for more volunteers to care for our little ones during our monthly meetings: Grandparents, friends, family, high school / home school or college students who can share one morning a month. MOPS members of past years have raised funds to make it possible for us to pay our volunteers a small amount each month to show our appreciation. If there is someone you are thinking of, please have them send me an email or call me with ANY questions they might have. We can sign them up for the months they are available. You won't even need to get out of your car! Or, to save time, print the MOPS registration form from here and fill it out ahead of time. Shop n' Coffee

A Shop n' Coffee will be held on Thursday July 21st from 7-9pm in the coffee shop known as "Common Grounds" inside Family Life Church located at 502 St. Paul Hwy in Newberg! (Park in the back parking lot and enter through the back doors. Follow everyone's voices to the coffee shop. It will be past the stairs and to your left). You can come, order a drink, do some shopping, and visit with friends. You can make it a girls night out, or bring your hubby for a coffee date night.

This is a fundraiser for the Budd Family (John & Abbie and girls). They are in the process of adopting a child.

Easter Bunny to soar-in at Museum

Families are invited to join the fun as the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum hosts the seventh annual Flying Easter Egg-Stravaganza. The event will include the arrival of the Easter Bunny via helicopter, an Easter egg hunt, a petting zoo and crafts. All children ages 10 and under need to arrive with their Easter basket at 8:15 a.m. to check in. Following check in, there will be a series of Easter egg hunts starting at 9 a.m., and the Easter Bunny’s grand entrance via helicopter at 9:15 a.m. The petting zoo will be open from 9 to 11 a.m. The Museum’s Education Department will also provide children’s Easter crafts throughout the event. The Easter Egg-Stravaganza event is $6 for members and $9 for general admission. Photos with the Easter Bunny are an additional $10. Portland Police Museum

The Portland Police Museum is a project of the Portland Police Historical Society and has been in existence since 1976. The Portland Police Historical Society is a non-profit organization formed by the members of the Portland Police Bureau and interested groups and individuals.
One half of the museum features a series of chronologically arranged exhibits offering photographs, equipment and uniform artifacts. The emphasis is upon the experience of the individual Portland Police Officer over the last 150 years.

Valentine's Day

From talking to many people from MOPS, it seems as though we all had a wonderful Valentine's Day. Thank you so much to Heidi for showing us how to make cards for our sweethearts. Here are a couple of pictures of us crafting our cards at our last MOPS meeting:

The Hydrangea group had a Valentine's party at Lynn Trachte's house. The kids decorated their own bags to put their treats in and also decorated their own cookies. It was a great playdate and the mommies even got to spend some time alone together.

A LITTLE BIT OF CRAFTING WITH THE KIDS...

Be My Valentine: Pencil Toppers (http://familyfun.go.com/)

These foam conversation hearts will let your child get right to the point of her Valentine's messages.

Materials: Scissors, Craft foam, Permanent markers, Pipe cleaner, Pencil

Instructions: Cut a 1- to 2-inch heart from craft foam. With a permanent marker, print a short message on the front and the name of the giver on back. Now poke an inch of the pipe cleaner through the bottom of the heart, bend it down, and twist it back around the remaining length of pipe cleaner. Coil the pipe cleaner tightly around the pencil. Then gently pull up on the heart so that part of the coil bobs freely above the pencil, with several loops anchored around the eraser end.

After searching for the perfect picture of the devastation in Haiti to add to our MOPS blog, I quickly realized that every picture stirs-up so much emotion within me. As moms, we empathize with the Haitian moms who have lost their children. As Americans we feel so undeserving of everything we have. As caring people, we wish we could adopt entire families or help rebuild this already poor nation. By now, most of us have heard of a loved one, a sponsor child, or a friend who has been directly impacted by this earthquake. By now we are wanting to reach out and help.

Marie Leslie is the Hydrangea Discussion Group Leader and she just had her beautiful baby girl this week. Baby Brystol was born Tuesday December 15th at 11:33am weighing 6 lbs. 10 oz. and measuring 20 inches long! Both mommy and baby are doing well. Older brother Brevin is still adjusting to the newness of baby Brystol's arrival but with Christmas just around the corner his focus will soon be elsewhere. Please join me in congratulating Marie, her husband John, and big brother Brevin on the birth of beautiful baby Brystol.

The LIVE NATIVITY at Attrell’s Newberg Funeral Chapel, which went up on Dec. 12 this year is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and will be open through Christmas Day. While Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus are represented by mannequins, Theodore the donkey and Miniature Babydoll Southdown sheep Whoopi and Miss Piggy are the real thing, courtesy of area farmer Fred Pohler. In addition to visiting with the animals in the 8- by 16-foot manger, visitors can also push a button and listen to a recording of Attrell reading the story of Jesus’ birth from the Bible. Virtually unchanged since it started in 1976, the nativity also features the original mannequins, Attrell said.

In case you missed it in last month's newsletter, I just wanted to remind you that Newberg's Tree Lighting & visit with Santa Claus will be this Thursday evening. (Yes - on CIVIL WAR night!) If you have no other plans, perhaps you would like to bring the family to experience all of the festivities. Here are the details:

Kids' Craft Sale, Library Tree Lighting and Santa Claus Visit!

5:00 pm Shop the Kids’ Craft Sale where local youth artisans, aged 18 years and younger, will be selling their wares in the library’s lobby and meeting room. Consider this opportunity to support local entrepreneurship, business education, & creativity for your holiday giving and shopping.

6:30 pm Newberg Christian Church carolers will be singing, and Santa will arrive on a fire truck to join us and light the tree out front!

6:45 pm After the tree lighting, Santa will head upstairs in the library for visits. Parents are welcome to bring along their cameras for this free photo opportunity! Be sure to get your colored tickets from library staff to take your turn with Santa Claus.

Hello ladies. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. This seems to be the weekend for cooking and baking so I thought I would share this recipe with you. This is a fun treat for the whole family. Enjoy!

Red Velvet Whoopie Pie

Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 Tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup butter, softened
1 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 1-oz. bottle red food coloring (2 Tbsp.)
1 recipe Whoopie Pie Filling, recipe below

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Line baking sheets with parchment; set aside. In medium bowl combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt; set aside.
2. In large mixing bowl beat butter on medium to high 30 seconds. Beat in brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Alternately add flour mixture and buttermilk, beating after each addition just until combined. Stir in food coloring.
3. Spoon batter in 1- or 2-inch diameter rounds, about 1/2-inch high on prepared baking sheets, allowing 1 inch between each round.
4. Bake 7 to 9 minutes for 1-inch cookies or 9 to 11 minutes for 2-inch cookies, or until tops are set. Cool completely on baking sheets on rack. Remove cooled cookies from baking sheets.
5. To fill, dollop Whoopie Pie Filling on flat sides of half the cookies. Top with remaining cookies, flat sides down. Makes 60 one-inch or 42 two-inch cookies.
6. Whoopie Pie Filling: In medium mixing bowl beat 1/4 cup softened butter and half an 8-ounce package softened cream cheese until smooth. Fold in one 7-ounce jar marshmallow creme.
7. To store: Refrigerate in airtight container up to 4 days. Let stand at room temperature 15 minutes before serving.

Night Out and Holiday Celebrations

CELEBRATE THE HOLIDAYS EARLY!

The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum in McMinnville is celebrating the holidays with three events – Breakfast with Santa on Dec. 12 and Polar Express Pajama Days on Dec. 5 and 19.

Breakfast with Santa will begin at 8 a.m. on Dec. 12 with Santa’s arrival by helicopter, followed by breakfast, photos with Santa and a showing of The Polar Express 3D in the Evergreen IMAX Theater. Santa will be available throughout the day for pictures in the Aviation Museum.

Space is limited. Cost for ages five and older is $14 for members and $18 for general public. Children from three to five years of age are $10 for members and $14 for general public. Children under the age of three are free but must sit on a parent’s lap during the movie. Photos with Santa are $10.

The Polar Express Pajama Days begin at 9:30 a.m. on Dec. 5 and 19 in the Evergreen IMAX Theater. Children can enjoy hot chocolate and listen to a reading of The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. Attendees will then see The Polar Express 3D in the IMAX Theater and create their own holiday crafts. All children who arrive in pajamas will receive a special $9 discounted rate for the event. General admission is $11.

Bring a new book to any of the December events and be entered into a drawing for family four-packs of IMAX tickets. All books will be donated to the McMinnville and Newberg libraries.

Not able to attend these events? You can still catch a showing of The Polar Express in 3D throughout the holiday season. From Nov. 27 to Jan. 7, The Polar Express will be playing at 11 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Evergreen IMAX Theater. Tickets are $11 for adults, $10 for seniors and $9 for youth.

On Saturday November 7th, we held our first Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale. We had over 40 vendors registered and the day turned out to be a great success. The bake sale was by donation only and the vendors purchased their own tables. All proceeds from the bake sale and tables (over $800) will go towards our MOPPETS program. The Newberg Fire Department will join the library to present a Fire Safety Storytime with stories, songs and fingerplays. A firefighter will wear full firefighting gear for children to see up close and talk about fire safety. This event will be held in the Library Annex (across the library parking lot in the white building).

Trick-o-Treat in Outer Space
McMinnville Museum offers safe environment for Halloween festivities.

The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum will host its annual Trick-o-Treat in Outer Space event on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Families can enjoy a petting zoo, a parade and safe trick or treating in the Evergreen Space Museum. The Museum Education Department will also offer Halloween crafts and a book reading of “Fright Night Flight” by Laura Krauss.

Tickets purchased before Oct. 29 are $5 for Museum members and youth (5-16), and $11 for adults. If purchased after Oct. 29, youth tickets will remain $5, but adult Museum members will be $8 and general admission will be $13. Ticket prices include admission to the Evergreen Space Museum.

MOPPETS DAY OUT, GOLF & Baby News

Our first MOPPETS DAY OUT was held on Monday at Fir Point Farms. The weather was a little chilly but that did not stop the kids (and moms) from having a great time. There was so much to see and do, from an animal petting area to an exciting "Nut House" filled with hazelnuts where the kids could run and play and make lots of noise. The huge boat with an attached slide was a big success and the hay maze and obstacle course kept everyone busy.

These extra-curricular outings are always a great way to relax and enjoy some time away from our regular structured meetings. Our next big event will be our MOMS NIGHT OUT (bring-your-own craft night) that will be held on November 20th from 7-10pm at Newberg Christian Church. We hope all moms can make it. Don't forget to mark it on your calendar.

An upcoming golf tournament at Chehalem Glenn Golf Course in Newberg will benefit Kyle Creger of Sherwood, Libbie Bailey of Newberg and Alaina Hahn of Tualatin who all suffer from liver diseases.

The tournament is still seeking golfers with a shotgun start set for 8 a.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be served. Also included will be a silent auction and radio station KUPL will be there to promote the event. A helicopter ball drop will occur first thing in the morning.

Love & Logic

A new class will begin on Oct 15th -Nov. 19th. It will be 6 Thursday nights from 6:00-7:30pm. The class cost is $35.00 with a free workbook (usually $12.00) and childcare is included on a limited basis. Please contact bassj@newberg.k12.or.us if you would like to sign up and if you will need childcare (names and ages). The class will be meeting at Joyful Servant Lutheran Church on Villa (by Crestview) and scholarships are available.

Tutoring

Our very own MOPS mom, Ursa Shaw, is beginning to tutor school aged kids in the area of Language Arts. She is looking to tutor middle/high schoolers so if you are interested, please contact Ursa at ursashaw@hotmail.com . First Meeting Has Come and Gone

This is the official welcome to the 2009-2010 session of MOPS members. Our first meeting is over but rest assured, the fun will continue. Our first MOPPETS outing is this month. We will meet at Fir Point Farms in Aurora on September 28th at 10am. Fir Point is a 35 acre farm with a fresh produce market, u-cut flowers, & ice cream. There are farm animals to visit and areas where the kids can play. The address to the farm is: 14601 NE Arndt Rd, Aurora, Oregon. This past week we did not have a special guest speaker as we were busy getting-to-know each other but next month we will be welcoming special guest speaker Melissa Kolstad. She will be focusing on our Relationship with Ourselves and finding our purpose. It should be a great time of reflection on how we perceive ourselves and how we manage the heavenly task of motherhood.

Remember those very cute calendars you made this week at our meeting? Please don't forget to mark our Halloween Costume swap for October's meeting. And again, this is a completely optional Costume Swap.

Our first MOPS meeting is this coming Monday September 14th. We will be set-up in the lobby of the Newberg Christian Church to show you what to do and where to go. Please arrive between 8:30am and 8:45am to give yourself enough time to drop your kids off in their respective classes. We are eager to see everyone again and to kick off this exciting year.

Notes:

We will be taking pictures of our moms at the first meeting for our photo directory.

Please feel free to bring pocket change or small bills to participate in a raffle.

If you have a classified ad to post on our new bulletin board, please bring a clearly written or typed copy of it to our meeting. (i.e. baby items for sale, renting a house...etc.)

Hello Ladies and welcome to the start of the new MOPS year. We have officially completed our registration and have enrolled moms and children for the upcoming 2009-2010 year. We are excited to meet new moms and we welcome all returning moms. We will learn about how to build relationships with each other and how to manage relationships with the ones we love at home. Our first meeting will be on September 14th from 8:45am - 11am. Please mark it on your calendar.

This year our theme is TOGETHER ON PLANET MOM. As moms we all have our moments when we struggle to find connections with the outside world, but we pray that our guest speakers this year will help bridge that gap and make us more courageable and eager to step out of our comfort zones.

There is still room for more moms and there is room in all children's classes. Please invite your friends to join by filling out the registration forms on the lefthand side of this page and sending them to Kim Caldwell (klauten@hotmail.com).

Registration Update

What a great turn out for today's 2009-2010 MOPS registration! We are looking forward to this coming year and all that it has to hold!

We still have room in the MOPPETS program, so if you missed today's registration, contact Kim Caldwell at klauten@hotmail.com to see about getting registered. The spots available are on a first come, first served basis due to childcare rooms filling up, so act fast!

REGISTRATION DAY!

It is time to start planning to register for the fall/winter semesters of MOPS. There are some very important changes that have been made for this coming year so please take note of them:

1. Registration Day will be on Monday August 10, 2009 in the parking lot of Newberg Christian Church (2315 Villa Rd., Newberg, Oregon) from 9am - 11am. It will be a drive thru registration but the park will also be open to serve as our scheduled monthly play date. Get there early to register. The MOPPETS' spots fill-up quickly!

2. Moms will register for the whole year. We encourage moms to pay for the entire year upfront but recognize this is not always possible for every mom. Therefore, moms may pay half on registration day and half in January.

Fees:

$70/year if you want to volunteer once per semester with the MOPPETS program
$90/year if you do not want to volunteer

The reason for this change is due to our low number of full-time child care workers for the upcoming year. By opening the door for MOPS moms to volunteer, we are able to keep the MOPPETS program running more smoothly.

3. Download a copy of the MOPS & MOPPETS registration forms that can be found on the left sidebar of this site under the section Registration Forms. Please fill them out and bring them with you on registration day. One MOPPETS form per child.

4. All full time MOPPETS workers and substitutes will be paid this year. Moms volunteering to work with the children once per semester will not be paid as they will receive a discount on registration fees. We are still searching for workers to care for our children so please invite your friends and family to come and serve in this way. Parade & Parks

The Newberg Old Fashioned Festival Parade was today and some of our MOPS steering team members were there to participate in the walk. It was a hot hot day but we came equipped with spray/water bottles. We just want to say thank you to the Nazarene MOPS group for designing our banner and the flyers that were handed out during the parade. It was a great day to be outside and the kids loved waving at the crowd.

With the increased weather temperatures, taking your children to a water park may be a great alternative to being cooped-up in the house. They can play and have fun while getting cooled off by the water. Here are a list of 3 water parks around the Newberg area.

It will start at Century and wind down to old town and finish at St. Francis School. There will be lots of eye catching entries and plenty of candy for our younger spectators. Sale & Playdate

Thank you to everyone who donated items to our rummage sale on Saturday. We had a great turn-out and all the proceeds from our sale will go towards rewarding our MOPPETS volunteers. Don't forget, there is still time to ask your friends and family to help take care of our kids. Without volunteers for the fall semester, we are limited to the number of ladies we can register in the MOPS program so if you think of someone who can help out, please contact Sarah Farris before registration day (August 10, 2009.)

We had another successful outing at the park yesterday. There was a little cloud cover but the kids and moms still had fun. Hopefully we will see more of you at our August playdate. Stay tuned to the blog for the time and location of the next one.
