Newberg MOPS

Welcome to Newberg MOPS!

MOPS is a grassroots movement that believes moms are world influencers. We believe that incubating hearts and giving just-because-hugs can change the course of history. That’s why MOPS connects moms all over the world to a community of women, in their own neighborhoods, who meet together to laugh, cry and embrace the journey of motherhood. MOPS groups are rallying women to be more honest, to feel more equipped and to find our identity by journeying alongside one another.

MOPS stands for Mothers of Preschoolers, and by preschoolers we mean kiddos from birth through kindergarten. We know it’s a little confusing so let’s just stick with “MOPS.”

We are moms, and we believe that better moms make a better world.

Get to know the 2015 Steering Team.... meet Stephanie Thouvenel

Name: Stephanie Thouvenel

Position: CARE

Kids/Family: My husband Joseph and I have have two beautiful, extremely active children that we attempt (and often fail) to keep up with. Our son Tad is 2 and our daughter Hope is 5.

Favorite thing to do with my family: We have been LOVING the summer sun and love exploring new parks and discovering open spaces to roam free. We also adore playing board games together. Favorite kid board game these days: Zingo! Fun for the whole family, even our 2 year old.

Where I grew up: I grew up here in Newberg. I always knew it was a great community to grow up in, and I couldn't be happier that my husband I were able to return to Newberg last year and raise our children here.

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself): I really love good, healthy food so much of my "free" time revolves around cooking and preserving food for my family. I adore a good book, candles, super soft blankets, and my favorite way to ward of stress is to go for a run, alone. Running after/with children does not count!

What I enjoy most about MOPS: I love being involved in such a great community who understands and accepts where I am coming from. There is something so refreshing and honest about the MOPS community, as we share our joys, our heartaches, and our stories.

Why I joined Steering: Hospitality is really important to me. Before I had kids, hospitality meant creating a peaceful, pristine environment in my home for people to share a meal, rest, laugh, and feel at home. These days it means inviting people into the chaos of my life, listening to their story and sharing mine in return, despite the messiness. Being a part of steering has given me a chance to connect with an amazing group of women and is an opportunity to offer hospitality in all its shapes and forms, to fellow moms from a variety of backgrounds and experiences. I have been hugely blessed by being a part of steering.

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS:   I'm really looking forward to celebrating lavishly with you all this year. Celebrating the small things, the big things, the good things, and even the hard things.

Meet the 2015 Steering Team....Andrea Valdez and Sarah Peterson!

This year we are fortunate enough to have TWO wonderful women sharing the Fundraising position on the Steering Team: Andrea Valdez and Sarah Peterson.  Get to know each of them and their beautiful families below:

Name: Andrea Valdez

Kids/Family: Husband Ryan, Andrew (4) and Ethan (2)

Favorite thing to do with my family:  Anything and everything – we enjoy being outdoors, road trips, movie nights, bowling, and so much more.

Where I grew up:  Southern California – Ryan and I moved here in 2008 less than a year after we got married to buy a house and start a family and we truly love it here.

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself):  Reading, cooking/baking, watching non-animated shows on TV, exercising, seeing friends, just sitting and enjoying the peace and calmness of my usually loud and chaotic household (and I only have 2 kids!)

Favorite MOPS memory:  Holding all the sweet newborn babies and it’s always a pleasure for me to hear Nancy Almquist!

What I enjoy most about MOPS:  The fellowship.  It’s so nice to be around a group of women that truly “get” where you’re at in life – your struggles, your triumphs.  And the deeps friendships I have developed are truly heaven-sent.

Why I joined Steering:  It is just something I felt called to do.

The theme this year is a Fierce Flourishing.  What it means to me:  A Fierce Flourishing means that I will celebrate being the mother to my 2 boys with all my might. Even though it doesn’t always feel like it, being a mother of small children is about much, much more than crying babies and poopy diapers. I think that’s what this year’s theme is trying to remind us all.

Name: Sarah Peterson

Kids/Family: Wyatt (4) Emma (2)

Favorite thing to do with my family: Spending time outside together in warm weather!
Where I grew up: Klamath Falls, OR

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself): Working out, sitting in the sun with a magazine or a good book, and going out to coffee.

What I enjoy most about MOPS: Fellowship with other moms

Why I joined Steering: I have always enjoyed coming to MOPS and thought it would be a good opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and be a part of a group that serves other moms.

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS: I look forward to building new relationships and diving deeper into what it means to truly flourish in my life as a mom.

Meet the 2015 Steering Team...Kellie Cox and Belinda Tanner!

This year we have the fabulous team of Kellie Cox and Belinda Tanner sharing the position of Creativity!  Together they plan and organize the craft activities for our monthly meetings...and have some amazing ideas!

Name:  Kellie Cox

Kids/Family: My husband Isaiah and I have two daughters,  Avalyn (20 months) and Grace (4 months)

Favorite thing to do with my family:  We live in Dundee so we love walking to Red Hills Market and getting a coffee and pastry to go, then walking to Billick park and playing with Ava (Grace gets to enjoy the stroller :) ).

Where I grew up:  Olympia, WA

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself):  Getting creative!  Perusing pinterest and finding a fun DIY for the house or activity with the girls is my favorite!  I also love the occasional leaving kids with hubby and having an evening coffee date with my fellow momma friends!

What I enjoy most about MOPS:  the fellowship and pampering!  The years are fast but the days are long when you have little ones at home and I so appreciate camaraderie of other MOPS moms.  Plus it's a chance to enjoy a nice breakfast (and not do dishes afterwards) sit a a lovely table, hear some wisdom from the speakers, and make something fun or pretty to take home!

Why I joined Steering:  As mentioned, two of my favorite things are friends and crafts so this seemed like a great opportunity to do both!  I also wanted to stretch myself by stepping into a leadership role.

The theme this year is a Fierce Flourishing.  What that means to me:  Please excuse the sappy metaphor, but honestly this phrase makes me picture a flower clinging to the side of a mountain, choosing to grow and produce beauty even though it takes effort and determination.  And because of the challenging environment, this plant's roots are deep and strong and it won't wither or die when a storm or outside forces come against it. As a follower of God and as a mom, I think you have to have a certain amount of tenacity!  We all know hardship and trials are inevitable in this life.  So we have to choose to make our roots, so to speak, deep and strong so that we can fiercely flourish despite the challenges.  I'm looking forward to digging deeper into what it really means to flourish despite circumstances or hardship.  And I think it will be even more enriching to share this journey with MOPS friends by being vulnerable, having authentic conversations, and supporting one another.

Name: Belinda Tanner

Kids and Family:  I have been married to my husband husband Monty for 8 1/2 years and we have a 5 year old son Nathaniel.

Favorite thing to do with family:  Spending time together!  We love spending time at our home gardening, building stuff, playing and taking care of our chickens. (We have 31 and are getting another 50 babies soon!)  We also enjoy day trip adventures and spending time with friends.

Where I grew up: I was born in Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) and when I was 11 we moved to South Africa. I moved to USA in 1992 and have lived in Southern and Northern California, Texas, Georgia and Alabama. Most recently I was in Fremont, CA for 14 years. We moved to Newberg in July 2014.

Hobbies:  The first thing I will do is spend time talking on the phone to family and friends far away.  I can spend an hour or 2 chatting to my sisters in South Africa.  I also enjoy reading, adult coloring, crafts and sewing. My guilty pleasure is to watch a good girlie movie.

What I enjoy most about MOPS:  I love spending time with Moms who are experiencing the same parenting challenges I am. It is great to get new ideas about parenting and is a great comfort to know that I am not alone and that my child is doing the same things others are doing.

Favorite MOPS memory:  I was fortunate to be able to attend MOM-CON IN Kansas in 2013. It really gave me an appreciation for how awesome and widespread MOPS is.

Why I joined steering:  I enjoyed last year with MOPS but only really got to know the Moms at my table. I tend to be shy when I first meet people and that can prevent me from connecting. I experienced being a table leader at MOPS in Fremont, CA and LOVED building friendships with the Moms there so I look forward to doing the same here.

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS:  Embracing the theme Fierce Flourishing and exploring what it means to to flourish as a Mother, Wife and Friend.

What I enjoy most about MOPS:  Meeting other moms who are at the same stage of life and get the craziness that goes along with that

Why I joined Steering:  This is my second year on steering and I love helping to make MOPS a place where moms can have break to rediscover the part of them outside the "mom" role.  As a working mom, I enjoy having MOPS as an outlet to be the more personal part of me instead of the professional one.

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS:  As the Service Coordinator this year (a position that we haven’t had before in Newberg MOPS), I am excited to reach out, both inside to our MOPS moms and to the community around us.

Get to Know Steerting...Meet Jenny Headley

Name:  Jenny Headley

Position:  Publicity

Kids/Family:  I am married to my husband Paul and we have an 18 month old son, Simon

Favorite thing to do with my family:  We love going hiking, going to the beach (definitely my son’s favorite!), and

Where I grew up: Tigard, Oregon.  I left the NW for about 8 years, then came back and we ended up in Newberg to be close to family and my husband’s job.

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself): I always love a good book.  Knitting is probably the thing that relaxes me most.  And I enjoy getting out doors…whether it is hiking or just going for a walk and enjoying the fresh air.  It clears my head.

What I enjoy most about MOPS:  The community.  It is wonderful to arrive on a Monday morning, and not only have breakfast provided but find the understanding and encouragement of other women who have similar joys and challenges of parenting a little one.

Why I joined Steering:  I have always enjoyed working with a team to make things come together, getting to know those that I work with and seeing something come out of all the work we do.  This is a wonderful group of women and I am enjoying getting to know them!

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS:  As I look forward to the coming year I am looking forward to growing personally and in community through Mops.  Learning from all the women, supporting—and accepting support—as we journey through whatever life brings this year.

Get to know Steering... Meet Christi Kokkeler

Name: Christi Kokkeler

Position: Registration

Kids/Family: I've been married to my Husband Zach for 9 years. We have 3 year old twin boys, Andy & Henry.

Favorite thing to do with my family: We love being outside together. Sometimes we're in our own backyard, but we also love taking day trips to explore new places and show the boys new things!

Where I grew up: I grew up in Eugene, Oregon.... but don't be fooled, we wear orange and black in our house and don't speak of those quacking water fowl!!

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself): I like to do crafty things, spend time with friends and play games.

What I enjoy most about MOPS: I love the community!

Why I joined Steering: I wanted to help support a group that had really encouraged me as a new mom. More selfishly, I loved the idea of growing deeper relationships with moms outside of the women at my table. As a stay at home mom, it also gives me a way to feel productive/challenged outside of parenting!

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS: meeting new friends and our theme! I'm excited to celebrate lavishly, embrace rest & notice goodness with all of you!

Get to know Steering Team.....Anna Duff

-->

Name- Anna Duff

Position - Finance

Kids/family – Lily (4 ½) Hayden (15 months)

Favorite thing to do with family – Okay, I’m going to be honest. Eating. Yes, I love food. Family and comfort food go hand and hand. It gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling just thinking about it. Looking back, some of my fondest family memories centered around a table of delicious food. Sharing a meal provokes laugher and conversation. In the end, I enjoy any and all family time with or witout food.

Where did you grow up – I was raised in Gresham Oregon and moved to Newberg in 2007 for my job. My husband and I instantly loved Newberg and have decided to make it our “forever town.”

Hobbies – My favorite quote is, “enjoy life’s simple pleasures.” This is exactly what I do. The smallest of things seems to thrill me and make life worth living. My life might seem humdrum to some, but this is exactly the way I like. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I enjoy being creative. I like sewing, craft projects and baking. I love polka dots and heels, but have also been known to enjoy a few monster truck rallies in my time. Number one in my life is my family and friends.

Favorite mops memory – I have many favorite MOPS memories! Do I have to choose one? I guess I would have to say that I most enjoy the Moms Time Outs. Necklace making, fondant class, meet and greats and so much more! I can’t choose just one!

Why did you join steering – I joined steering as a personal challenge. I tend to be a shy person and get a little too comfortable with my simple day to day life. I knew I needed to branch out and meet other moms. I needed to challenge myself and step outside of my comfort zone. It was announced at my very first MOPS meeting that the crafts position was open. This was right up my alley. I decided to dive right in and go for it. This ended up being a great decision. The friendships and comradery I have experience by being a part of steering has been amazing. After 2 years doing crafts, I am now giving finance a try.

What are you most looking forward to for this year of mops – I am most looking forward to learning. The knowledge I have gained from other MOPS moms over the past 3 years in priceless. In terms of raising a preschooler and getting through all the stages that crop up between birth and age 5, some moms have been there before, some are there right now and some have yet to get there. Each of us has different experiences and knowledge to share.  It’s fun to share the good times with friends, but also good to know that you are not alone during the rough times. I think there is truly something special and powerful about a woman’s relationship and bond with other woman

Get to know 2015 Steering Team!

-->
Name: Angela Kantz

Position: Coordinator (includes making sure all the details come together for meetings and scheduling speakers)

Kids/Family: I’m married to my husband Ben. We are celebrating 10 years of marriage this coming December. We have two children. Noah will be five in September and Selah is 18 months.

Favorite thing to do with my family: With Ben’s work schedule we don’t have a lot of time together as a family, but I love when we all walk to the park, run errands together, or go on a bike ride.

Where I grew up: I lived in Indiana until I was ten, and then my family moved to Newberg. I’ve been in Newberg for the last 24 years.

Hobbies (what I enjoy doing when a have some time to myself): I love to read, go on walks, and spend time with my friends.

What I enjoy most about MOPS: I really really love the relationships that come from MOPS. I look forward to catching up with my table group each month and I have gained some longer lasting friendships. I also know how important it is for those who are new to the area and don’t have the same support as I do. I hear over and over how wonderful it is to have MOPS. Motherhood is such a huge part of life right now and it is nice having others going thru it with me.

Why I joined Steering: I joined steering because I didn’t have a great first year. I decided instead of giving up on it, I would help plan it! This is my fourth year on steering and I really love it. It is fun serving alongside a great group of people AND I get to spend time with Nancy and that is always great.

What I am looking forward to this year with MOPS: I’m looking forward to really digging into the theme of “ A Fierce Flourishing”  not only for our group but also for myself personally. I am going to really try and challenge myself to lean in to celebrating lavishly, embracing rest, and seeing goodness.
